Recipes for Eco-Friendly Household Cleaners

Today is my first guest post on Team Eco Etsy's blog for Green Living! I am very excited to be part of the Eco Etsy team and I wanted to share this post with you.

The ingredients in most of the more popular household cleaners today include harsh or toxic products that can harm the environment and you. With the “green” revolution in full force these days, there are more and more non-toxic products being introduced. I personally love the “Seventh Generation” products. These products smell great, come in recycled packaging and do a great job. But if you are like me, a clean freak who purchases a lot of cleaning supplies, it can get a bit pricey. I recently read an article in Natural Home Magazine about making your own oven cleaner with products you probably have in your pantry. This inspired me to make my own cleaners and share some of the recipes with you. Simple items like lemons, olive oil and baking soda do the trick for getting out those stubborn stains and disinfecting the natural way. I have compiled a shopping list and a few great recipes to get you started making your own cleaners! Remember, you can experiment with these ingredients to make your own custom cleaner just for your needs.

Mid-Century Modern Tableware

I recently came across the best example of
1950's modern tableware. This set called
"Aquaria" was made in 1955 by Salem and
designed by the world famous Industrial
Designer, Victor Schreckengost. Viktor
was born in 1906 in Sebring Ohio. He
studied at the Cleveland School of Art
and graduated in 1929. He taught there
for 50 years and founded their prestigious
Industrial Design School, one of the first
in the US. He received the National Medal
of Arts from President George W. Bush in
2006 at the age of 100. His pottery pieces
are very rare and highly collectable.
These are the creme de la creme!

Art Basel Miami- 2011

Art Basel....need I say more? I was lucky enough to attend one of the most prestigious art shows in the Americas. More than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa are exihibiting, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. If you ever get the chance to attend, it's well worth the trip. Here are a few of the highlights. I will be attending Design Miami today, so more to come. Enjoy!

Pillow covers are printed on a sophisticated light-weight canvas woven from 55% linen and 45% combed cotton. Estimated shrinkage minimal. Machine wash cool on gentle cycle using phosphate-free detergent. Hang to dry, warm iron. Best results: hand-wash with woolite to ensure the colors stay rich and vibrant. Printed in the USA with water-based inks.

The pillow is backed with 100% recycled plastic bottle eco-felt. Using recycled plastic
keeps billions of plastic PET bottles out of the world’s landfills each year. 10 bottles equal one pound of polyester fiber. This fiber can be used on its own or mixed with cotton or wool to make clothing, etc. By supporting recycling we can lower harmful air emissions and save millions of barrels of oil from being used which, in turn, reduces the harmful effects of acid rain, global warming, and smog.

This pillow comes with a zipper closure and a natural linen ekofabrik tag.
